Ivory Coast made their FIFA World Cup debut in 2006, having had to pass through a “Group of Death” which included Egypt, Cameroon and Sudan, in the qualifiers.

In the tournament proper, they also found themselves in another “Group of Death,” alongside Argentina, Netherlands and Serbia & Montenegro.

They lost 2-1 to Argentina in their opening fixture, with Didier Drogba scoring their first ever World Cup goal in the 82nd minute.

They also lost 2-1 to Netherlands in their next game, with Bakari Kone scoring their only goal.

They played against Serbia & Montenegro next, with no hope for either team qualifying for the knockout stages (as neither team had won any game, while Argentina and Netherlands both had six points already).

Ivory Coast were 2-0 down after 20 minutes but Aruna Dindane scored twice while Bonaventure Kalou scored a late penalty to produce a 3-2 comeback- and give the team their first ever World Cup win.
